Hakone, a hidden gem located at 13907 127 St, Edmonton, offers an authentic Japanese culinary experience that keeps patrons coming back for more. From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed as if entering a friend’s home, thanks to the warm hospitality of the owner and chef, who personally prepares each dish.
Reviewers rave about the generous portions and exceptional flavors. Jenna Christensen declares Hakone serves the "best beef tataki" she's ever tasted, while Daniel Cunningham fondly reminisces about the restaurant's welcoming ambiance and exquisite offerings, from crunchy mixed tempura to delectable salmon nigiri. The dynamite roll, with its contrasting textures, is touted as a must-try, especially when enjoyed on-site.
Moreover, Zokah emphasizes the quality of sushi and nigiri, complimenting the selection of craft beers. Though the service may be a tad slow at times, many agree it’s well worth the wait. Overall, Hakone sets a high bar for Japanese cuisine in Edmonton, blending superb food with a heartfelt dining experience that can't be missed.

I love this place!!! I love the lady who does all the cooking. Prices are so good for the amount you get. Best beef tattaki I’ve had and definitely lots of beef no skimping out here!

What can I say? My husband and I have been coming to Hakone, ever since we moved into the neighbourhood 15 years ago. It was different then. Our waitress wore a traditional kimono and the tables along the windows were always occupied. During the Summer, the air conditioning was working full time, a great relief from the heat and humidity outside. During COVID, take out was an effortless experience. Now, it's like another reviewer has stated: it's like the owner, who is also the chef, is welcoming you into her home. She prepares the dishes in her kitchen or the sushi bar and then brings them to your table one after another, with just enough time between courses to savour all the flavours. No rush. Just amazing food and service. Everything on the menu is wonderful but my husband and I have become very fussy in our old age. For take out, we order lots of salmon nigiri and a dynamite roll. Truly scrumptious. Two weeks ago we had the pleasure of dining in the restaurant. We started with the mixed tempura. Here, it's served the way it should be, almost too hot to eat and crunchy to the last piece. Then we had the salmon nigiri. Simply the best. We closed our meal with the dynamite role. Amazing! A dynamite roll is great as take out but so much better when eaten in house. The heat from the tempura shrimp, does something to the mayo and avocado that is simply divine. A true culinary experience. Great food! Great service! And the most wonderful host and chef that you could possibly want.

Some of the best Japanese food in Edmonton. Great sushi, great nigiri, really good beer. It's just the owner who works here so it can be a little slow but it's worth it.

It was a really japanese authentic experience. The owner was very welcoming and very nice. We ordered prawn tempura, beef tataki, salmon teriyaki and a sashimi boat deluxe. Which si all very good. Would recommend to anyone looking for a japanese restaurant. Would love to visit again.

Honestly it's nice if you're looking for a chill spot to unwind, no one else was there. Lady working there is really nice. The food was pretty good, reasonably priced, tbh probably gonna walk over every now and again since it's so close by. Hidden gem.

Have been coming here for over a year almost every week. The owner always greets us at door with a smile. Food is authentic, fresh and tasty. Sushi is high quality and fresh, love the salmon don. Dynamite rolls are best in Edmonton! Continues to be a weekly trip to this restaurant.

Very fresh! Everything I ordered (miso soup, tempura, dragon eye roll) was all clearly made right when I ordered it and it was delicious! Prices and serving sizes were about the same as any other authentic style Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. The quiet atmosphere is perfect for relaxing, and would be a great location for a date.

Was looking for something late on a Sunday, for my son and I. Showed up 15 minutes before closing. Ordered food to go, as they were closing. Lady was making sushi rolls, and letting us eat while she finished the bigger stuff. Then wouldn't let us leave, because we were travelling and she didn't want us to eat in the truck. The sushi was great. We had an array, all pieces were great size and fresh fish. The ladies struck up conversation with my son, and even threw in some cookies for him. They ended up staying until 9:45, well after closing. Not once did we feel unwelcome. I would highly recommend them, any time. I will definitely be going back, but avoid being "that guy" at closing.
